Change your body composition, precisely
Less fat, more lean mass, measured properly rather than guessed at from the bathroom scales. Coached in Marylebone, London, and remotely.
Overview
What is body composition?
Body composition is the split between fat mass and lean mass, and where each sits on your body. It is the thing almost everyone actually means when they talk about weight, and it is the thing a set of scales cannot tell you.
Two people at identical weights can have very different bodies, health markers and capabilities. Which is why the work here is built around a measured starting point and a measured endpoint: a DEXA scan gives lean mass, fat mass and their distribution as numbers, and a retest later tells you plainly whether the programme worked.
Between those two points the plan is unremarkable and effective: progressive strength work to build and hold lean mass, aerobic work dosed rather than piled on, and a nutrition strategy that survives travel and client dinners. No extreme restriction, because a plan you abandon in eight weeks changes nothing.
The benefits of changing body composition
You look different at the same weight
Losing fat while holding or adding lean mass changes shape far more than the number on the scales suggests. It is the reason two people at the same weight can look, and feel, nothing alike.
Progress you can actually verify
A DEXA scan at the start and again months later replaces the guesswork of scales and mirrors. When change is measured on the same instrument, you know what worked and what did not.
Metabolic markers tend to follow
Reducing fat mass, particularly around the middle, and building lean mass are widely associated with better metabolic health. The composition work and the health work are largely the same work.
A result that stays put
Built through progressive training and a way of eating you could still be doing in two years, the change holds. Built through severe restriction, it reverses the moment normal life resumes.
What gets in the way
Why body composition stops moving
- Training that never progresses in load, so there is no reason for lean mass to increase
- Cutting intake hard, which loses muscle alongside fat and lowers what you can train
- Protein set too low to hold lean mass while fat mass comes down
- Cardio treated as the whole answer, with strength work squeezed out of the week
- Progress judged by bodyweight alone, which hides the change that is actually happening
- Six weeks of discipline followed by six months of nothing, repeated for years

Frequently asked
questions
How long does a real change in body composition take?
Leigh puts it at twelve weeks to feel a meaningful shift and six to twelve months to genuinely change, which matches how the underlying tissue actually behaves. Visible change usually arrives before measured change plateaus, and the honest answer depends on your starting point and consistency.
Why not just weigh myself?
Because bodyweight combines fat, muscle, water and food, and it moves for reasons that have nothing to do with progress. Someone who loses four kilos of fat and gains two of muscle sees almost nothing on the scales while having substantially changed their body. Composition measurement separates the two.
Do I have to be in a calorie deficit the whole time?
No, and it is usually counterproductive. Periods of eating at or slightly above maintenance are what let lean mass build, and they are planned deliberately rather than treated as a failure of discipline. The strategy alternates according to what the current block is for.
