Metabolic health, measured and acted on
Move the markers that matter: blood work and body composition measured properly, then training, nutrition and sleep built around what they show.
Overview
What is metabolic health?
Metabolic health describes how well your body handles fuel: blood glucose, insulin sensitivity, blood lipids, blood pressure and where fat is stored. It is the cluster of markers that sits underneath most of the conditions people hope to avoid, and it is largely invisible until it is measured.
Plenty of clients arrive here after a health scare or a routine check that flagged something, and plenty arrive because a milestone birthday made them want the numbers. Either way the sequence is the same: measure it, act on it, retest.
The measurement runs through clinical diagnostics, where an advanced blood panel and a DEXA scan are delivered by a regulated provider and reviewed by a private physician. The action is coaching: strength and aerobic work dosed properly, a nutrition strategy aimed at the markers, and sleep and stress addressed because both move metabolic health more than most people expect.
To be clear about the line: the medical interpretation belongs to the physician and your GP. W1 Performance is not a medical provider, and this page is not medical advice.
The benefits of working on metabolic health
Numbers instead of assumptions
A panel and a scan replace a general sense that things are probably fine. Measured early, an unfavourable trend is something you can act on rather than something you discover late.
Training aimed at the right thing
When the markers are known, the programme has a target. Aerobic dose, strength volume and nutrition all get set against what your own results show rather than against a general recommendation.
Prevention that is actually specific
Prevention tends to be advice in the abstract. Here it is your glucose handling, your lipids, your visceral fat and your bone density, tracked over time on the same instruments.
Clinical oversight where it belongs
The physician review means anything medical is handled by a clinician rather than by a coach reading a spreadsheet. That separation is what makes the coaching layer safe to act on.
What gets in the way
What pushes metabolic markers the wrong way
- Long periods of sitting, with little strength or aerobic training in the week
- Fat accumulating around the middle, which is the deposit most associated with metabolic risk
- Sustained short sleep, which measurably affects glucose handling and appetite
- Chronic pressure with no recovery built in anywhere
- Alcohol and eating patterns that reflect a diary rather than a plan
- Nothing being measured, so change happens for years without anyone noticing
How it works
How W1 Performance works on metabolic health
Clinical Diagnostics
On enquiryAn advanced blood panel, DEXA scan and physician review turn metabolic health from an assumption into numbers, with a retest point set so the work can be judged.

Frequently asked
questions
Is this medical care?
No. W1 Performance is a coaching practice and Leigh is not a clinician. Blood work and scanning are delivered by a regulated diagnostics provider, and the medical review and any onward advice sit with the physician and your GP. Leigh coordinates the process and builds the coaching response.
My GP said my results were fine. Is there any point?
Often yes, because standard reference ranges are set to flag disease rather than to describe optimal function, and a result inside range can still be trending badly. An advanced panel and a DEXA scan give more resolution, and the physician review is what interprets it responsibly.
How quickly can metabolic markers change?
Some move faster than people expect. Improvements in glucose handling and blood pressure can appear within weeks of consistent training and better sleep, while lipids and body composition generally take a few months. A retest point is agreed when the first panel is taken.
